Richard Luces
Tropical Sunset
Read review
Sorry, not available |
Tropical Sunset has been popular with West Indian baby boomers
and older folks for a while. And no wonder, it is as nostalgic
and varied as popular radio music has been in the West Indies
for the last fifty years. Richard Luces’ keyboards, there is no
Pan, contradicting the picture on the CD booklet, play from Sly
Mongoose to Besame Mucho to Ragga Ragga. The most intriguing
track is Sahanni Raat, the theme song that signaled the
beginning of the daily program of Indian music. The Rhythmaires
Band of Guyana made it even more popular as a slow dance party
tune and here it is in a Chutney Medley. The genre is not quite
right but the tune is a pleasure to hear.
Tropical Sunset is likely to evoke fond memories especially
if you liked the classic Calypsoes from Kitch and Sparrow, the
piano melodies of Stanley Black and the Spanish guitars of Los
Indios Tabajaras. The Spanish, Merengue, Salsa and Mexican
medleys add a distinctive Latin flavor making the CD a truly
Caribbean stew. [eCaroh/Ron - October 2000] |
