Inside Trinidad and Tobago Carnival 2008
“Inside Trinidad and Tobago Carnival 2008 is the 6th edition of
the award winning DVD series. Come inside and experience this annual
bacchanal of fete, steelpan and mas all compiled during a tight and
hectic Carnival schedule” is the invitation in the DVD’s liner
notes.
Featured artistes include David Rudder, The Mighty Sparrow,
Shurwayne Winchester, Patrice Roberts, Problem Child, Len Boogsie
Sharpe, and Machel Montano.
Mas’ costumes competitors on display at the Dimanche Gras Mas
also highlight the prospective Kings and Queens.
The street processions include the sweet innocence of Kiddies
Carnival.
Introspection and revelations come from interviews with Allison
Hinds; Raymond Ramnarine and Derrick Seales of Dil-E-Nadan; SSL
Melobugs’ women members; David Rudder on the steelpan’s African
linkage; and Peter Minshall’s oral interpretations of the universe’s
thrust of pan into Trinidad and Tobago.
“Trinidad Carnival is one of the truest and original forms of
Carnival in the world. Centuries old, its genesis dates back to
[European] colonialism and [African] slavery. It originated from the
practice of celebrating and feasting before the beginning of Lent:
Carnevale, the farewell to the flesh."
"Thus the Trini Carnival, as in Rio and New Orleans, depends on
the Lenten calendar. Always and forever Trinidad Carnival will be on
the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday” the liner statement
asserts.
